Volunteer Spotlight: Carolyn Attah

Carolyn Attah and her family were new to the school when her daughter came home from first grade all eager about the new Girl Scout troop forming.

“The look in her eyes and the excitement in her voice sold me immediately,” Carolyn recalls. “She was trying to help her mom make new friends, and it worked.” A former Girl Scout, Carolyn has volunteered as the treasurer and leader/co-leader for Troop 77091 out of Southfield.

In fact, one of her favorite parts about volunteering with Girl Scouts was the long-lasting friendships she has formed over the years. “That and spending precious time with my daughter,” she said.

Of all the activities Carolyn and the troop engaged in, it was her first camping trip at GSSEM’s Camp Hawthorn Hollow with her daughter that remains a favorite memory. “We had an unbelievable time, connecting and bonding with the other families attending,” she said. “I love looking back at the photos of the girls, wondering where the time has gone.”

For Carolyn, being a leader pushed her to attempt many different things she never would have tried before heading a troop.

“This city girl has grown to appreciate the outside, that’s for sure,” she jokes.
Her current goal is to encourage her troop to dream big and take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way. “The best way to grow is by taking chances,” she believes.
