Gold Award Girl Scout-Aria Brown

Cultivating Awareness, Diversity and Representation

What Aria Did

Aria decided her Gold Award project would address the lack of diversity and representation of people of color in the social studies curriculum of her school district.

To correct that issue, Aria wrote, filmed, edited, and published a series of 13 different educational videos, focusing on different cultural diversity months. She worked alongside her school’s PEACE Club, a club dedicated to increasing diversity and cultural education, as well as Affirm Celebrate Advocate, a local organization created to uplift and acknowledge the experiences of people of color, to develop the material.

With the help of those groups and her peers, her videos will live on in her school district because of teachers to implementing them in the classroom. The videos are also available through her Cultivating Awareness YouTube channel where they can be utilized by students and teachers nationwide.

“Our world is very diverse, and I think it’s very important to understand and celebrate many different identities and cultures and to understand people that are different,” she said.

What She Learned

Aria says completing her Take Action project gave her a greater sense of what it means to be a leader. She discovered that through persistent work and dedication, positive changes can be made in one’s community.

Aria graduated from Clarkston High School in Clarkston, MI. She was a member of Troop #74448.
