Introducing Girltastic Takeover!

GSSEM is proud to support our many FIRST robotics teams, including our very first FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team! Girltastic is comprised of nine Cadettes from all over our council, as well as their two wonderful coaches, Mary W. and Jeni P. The team will be taking over a blog post once a month, so stay tuned for more STEM activities!

Oreo Moon Phases:

What better way to learn about the moon than using Oreos?! When we did Oreo Moon Phases, it was so much fun, and we hope you enjoy this activity just as much as we did!

The first thing you do is gather all of the supplies. You’ll need: Oreos, a knife, paper, and a pen. Next, do some research on the moon and its different phases. We were surprised when we found out there are actually eight different moon phases. We also learned that four of the primary phases occur within a week! After you finish your research, find a picture of all eight moon phases to use as a reference. Now, use the knife to make the cream on the Oreo look like the different phases. Lastly, put the Oreos onto the paper and label them.

Here are some helpful tips we learned that we think will help you out. First, make sure you have extra Oreos. Sometimes when you are arranging the cream the cookies will break. When they break you can eat them or just eat a couple for fun!! Watch out for brothers or sisters coming and eating your Oreos. If you don’t have access to the internet, you can always use a good old book to look up the different phases of the moon. It could also be helpful to have more tools to arrange the cream than just a knife. We suggest also having a toothpick handy for molding the cream. We hope you have a ton of fun building your moons and get to eat lots of Oreos!!!
