Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy Smith

Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy Smith

Kathy Smith, a long-time volunteer, has more to offer.

While she may be the focus of the first Volunteer Spotlight of the new year, it is not Kathy Smith’s first year volunteering for Girl Scouts. Or her second … or tenth.

Kathy began her journey with the Girl Scouts as a volunteer with her daughter’s troop, nearly 50 years ago!

Over those years, she has participated on dozens of committees including Highest Awards, Volunteer National Awards. “FORE! the Girls” Golf Classic, and Senior Planning Board. She found time to be a Troop Leader, Treasurer, and Program Manager. Kathy proudly represented Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan as a National Convention Delegate.

“It’s worth it to be able to watch girls learn, grow, and become young women with potential,” she said. Kathy has helped numerous Girl Scouts achieve their Silver and Gold Awards and looks forward to continuing to be as supportive and helpful whenever and wherever she can.

For Kathy, besides the girls and camping in Dorchester, some of her favorite memories include many of the adults she met while being active in Girl Scouts.

“I have friendships that began 46 years ago and many of them are still a part of my life,” Kathy said. “I hope my girls enjoy friendships developed through Girl Scouting like that, too.”

“I tell aspiring Leaders/Volunteers to come join us. Share who you are, see where you can go and who you can become!” – Kathy Smith

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
