Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan is pleased to honor Harmony with the most prestigious award in the world for girls: the Girl Scout Gold Award. Harmony is among 13 young women who have made a difference in each of their respective communities through sustainable, community change projects. The time and continuous effort these girls have dedicated towards their projects prove they’re true leaders, innovators, and exceptional examples for all girls to look up to.
The Gold Award is Girl Scout’s highest honor and girls are required to spend at least 80 hours investigating the problem, creating a plan, and implementing it. It is presented to Girl Scouts who address a community issue or problem they’re passionate about. Harmony chose to educate her community on the benefits of eating less meat for her project.
Harmony raised awareness on the impacts of excessive meat consumption. After learning about the negative effects consuming excessive amounts of meat can have on an individual’s health, animal welfare, and the environment, she decided to make a change. She designed and published a coloring book that highlighted the health benefits, environmental benefits, and ethical dilemma in a less meat-oriented diet. She worked to get her book in as many hands as possible by creating a promotional/educational video, passing out flyers, giving talks and presentations, publishing the book online, and giving the books away for free. This resulted in a more educated community and brought traction to the issues related to excessive meat consumption.
“I developed my leadership potential, faced some fears, and overcame unexpected obstacles. I found that through focus and drive, I could reach my goals.”
