GSSEM is full of some of the most talented, adventurous, and innovative girls in the world and as a council, it’s amazing to watch them transform into leaders. Among these girls is Lauren H., a Girl Scout Senior, who made it all the way to State Finals in the Michigan History Day competition, after writing a paper about Girl Scouts’ rich history. This remarkable achievement showcases not only her passion for history and research, but also her dedication and admiration for Girl Scouting and its founder, Juliette Gordon Low.
Michigan History Day, an annual competition organized by the Historical Society of Michigan, brings together young historians from across the state to celebrate their research, critical thinking, and communication skills. Participants present their projects on various historical topics, diving into the past and highlighting the impact of individuals, events, or ideas on society.
This year’s competition theme was Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas. Under the guidance and support of her troop leader, Annie, and with the support of her school, Lauren says although the theme was broad, choosing Girl Scouts to write about was easy.
“One of the main reasons I chose Girl Scouts was because of the enormous positive impact it’s had on my life. Juliette Gordon Low created an organization that pushed the frontier on the conventional and traditional expectations for girls forward.”
Being in Girl Scouts for nearly nine years, Lauren has been exposed to everything from camp, to cookie season, to STEM, and everything in between. She’s consistently exemplified the values of leadership, community engagement, and perseverance. Not to mention, she’s a Bronze and Silver Award recipient!
What’s next for this Girl Scout? Lauren says she’s excited to start working towards earning her Gold Award and making more positive impacts in her community! GSSEM hopes her accomplishment will inspire other young leaders to pursue their interests and engage with their communities.
Congrats on Lauren on this huge accomplishment!
