Project: Save the Birds!

Stella’s Gold Award project took flight after years of chatting with the naturalists at For-Mar Nature Preserve in Flint.

Birds were having a tough time seeing the forest between the glass reflections and were suffering causalities because of hitting the visitor center windows.

“The only way to protect the birds in this situation was to provide a safe visual, like long-lasting adhesive bird dots to the windows and doors,” she said. The dots should last up to ten years.

Flock Together

With input from the naturalists at the center, she also created an exhibit about native birds, and the effect they have on the environment.

Stella also wanted the community to know that adhesive dots aren’t the only visual that can help detour birds from fatal impacts.

Stella used upcycled materials to create personalized DIY bird “dots” with elementary and pre/school students for them to put in their classroom window, while explaining the importance of why they are making the pretty deterrents.

“Birds are so vital to the natural balance,” she said. “With a few small changes, we can make a big difference for the native populations that live among us.”
