Project: Renew and Start Anew
It was while representing GSSEM and young women in general at a 2025 United Nations conference that Jasmine was struck with inspiration for her Gold Award project.
“I wanted to highlight the benefits of renewable energy and the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels,” she said.
Jasmine developed and delivered detailed presentations to local community members, service organizations, and businesses, including DTE renewable energy strategists, advocating the benefits of environmental sustainability.
Explaining renewable concepts
Using various models and examples, Jasmine explained different renewable energy options and offered solid ways people can reduce their carbon footprint.
“This issue is both a matter of environmental justice and social equity,” she said. “Families coming from low socioeconomic populations are not only more likely to live in areas near energy production sites like pipelines or coal plants, but also often lack the resources to escape the detrimental effects of pollution, poor air quality, and rising energy costs.”
During her presentations, Jasmine would do activities with attendees to help drive home her message. One technique she used was building mini-solar panels that participants could take home with them.
“By providing resources to help renewable energy adoption, I hope my education enables communities to transition away from socially and environmentally costly fossil fuels,” she said. “By creating pathways for energy independence, I aim to reduce long term reliance on non-renewable energy sources and foster a more sustainable and equitable future.”
