Congratulations, Delayna, on earning your Gold Award. GSSEM is proud of you and your dedication to making a positive impact on your community and beyond.
Project: FreshFoods4Faith
Delayna’s Gold Award took root in a small community garden at her local church.
Her goal was simple—to provide members of the community with locally-grown fruits, teach them about the healthy benefits of fresh foods, and to introduce the basics of starting a food garden.
After researching the logistics of the garden plot including fencing, soil testing and appropriate plants, Delayna gathered a group of volunteers to construct a garden on church property.
They planted blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, sage and lavender. Berries, Delayna discovered, are easier to grow than traditional vegetables.
After a successful growing season, the fruits of their collective labor went to an established food pantry located on the church property.
Good to grow
Delayna encouraged the church youth group to participate in the building, planting and harvesting of the garden. The kids had a great time learning how to be farmers and plan on keeping the garden growing while Delayna is away at college.

In addition to growing fresh fruits for the food pantry, Delayna raised awareness about the food pantry and its needed support for members of the community through a website and a pamphlet.
