Project: Proper Sharps Disposal

Inspired by her grandmother who uses multiple sharps daily for diabetes, Emma’s Gold Award project educated a large population of people on a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of the medical instruments.

She created a detailed and informative website which included a video on how to make a DIY sharps collection container out of a pod laundry detergent container. She also explained how to find a local sharps collection site.

Emma also made multiple presentations at her school and her church and printed flyers to hand out to older adults who might have issues using the internet.

Spreading the message

To make an even greater impact, Emma decided to use her language skills and created a Romanian version of all her educational presentations. Her church has a large population of Romanian-speaking senior citizens, like her grandmother, who also use medical sharps.

According to reports from her grandmother, Emma’s project was well received by members of the church and community with many sharps’ users having changed the way they dispose of them.
