Project: Center Yourself

When Ja’Breya began considering options for her Gold Award project, she only needed to look towards family to be inspired.

Her uncle has autism and Ja’Breya knows other people with various degrees of sensory processing issues. She created sensory bags for people dealing with ADHD, autism, and other sensory processing issues to help them stay focused in school, meetings, and appointments.

“I wanted to help people with sensory issues. I aimed to address how situations are dealt with, and how to help them better cope with such situations,” Ja’Breya said. Ja’Breya herself has sensory-issues.

Fidgets for focus

She worked with a team of professionals, family members, and volunteers from her church and school to create and distribute sensory bags at doctors’ offices, health clinics, and churches.

“These bags offer various coping strategies and support to help them avoid becoming overwhelmed with sound,” Ja’Breya explained. The sensory bag would have a fidget toy in there for different situations.”

Ja’Breya also held a workshop and created a YouTube video explaining her project and how it works.

Since graduating from Cass Technical High School, Ja’Breya is pursuing her dream of becoming a Japanese language teacher at Eastern Michigan University.
