Gold Award Girl Scout: Katelyn Smith

Gold Award Girl Scout: Katelyn Smith

Congratulations, Katelyn, on earning your Gold Award! GSSEM is proud of you and your dedication to making a positive impact on your community and beyond.

Project: Almont Middle School Robotics Club

Katelyn has been tinkering with robotics for as long as she can remember. For her Gold Award project, she founded and ran the first middle school robotics club in a district to help close the gap in STEM education in more rural communities.

“STEM careers can be applied every day without anyone realizing it,” she said. “From figuring out the structural design to homes, to designing cars, to solving issues with electrical distributions, engineers have a hand in each of these areas.”

The impressive response by the students and parents to the club activation helped the school recognize the amount of STEM interest within the school and community.

Full STEM ahead

Over five weeks of after school meetings, Katelyn taught younger students the basics in robotics—design, building, and programming—through LEGOs and robotic kits.

In addition, the Almont Middle School Robotics Club members also learned teamwork and presentation skills during the actual robot builds.

Katelyn left the robot-building kits with fourth grade teachers so the project will engage more students in STEM education.

Katelyn hopes the club will spark an interest in robotics, engineering, and/or STEM at an early age and beyond.

“It is important that students are aware of the job opportunities that STEM offers around the world,” she said. “Students can continue this interest to high school with many taking it beyond high school to create a career that they have loved from a young age.”
