2025 Gold Award Girl Scout: Daphne Palmer

Project: Brandon Township Public Library Seed Library

Daphne Palmer expects her Gold Award project to be bountiful for years to come.

Free the seeds

Daphne decided the best way to help ensure food security was to create a seed library, providing a free seed resource for her community. With the help of volunteers, over 700 fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs seed packets were labeled and sorted.

“The seed library only has seeds that will grow successfully in this area,” Daphne said.

Anyone can check out some seed packets from the Brandon Public Library. The only request is to restock the packets with new, dry seeds before returning to the library.

“I hope my project’s impact involves environmental conservation, encouraging home gardening, and fostering community connections,” she said.

New and seasoned farmers will benefit from Daphne’s education pamphlets on seed saving, how to effectively grow and harvest plants, and deer prevention tactics.

Gold Lessons

Daphne’s tending to her seed garden taught her about communication, decision-making, and being flexible. She discovered that being able to clearly define what was needed, even when pivoting, was very important

“The project pushed me to my limit sometimes, but I now have more self-awareness of what I am truly capable of when I put my mind to it,” she said.

Daphne graduated from Oxford High School and was a member of Troop 70945. Her college plans include marine or environmental science.
