Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan is pleased to honor Olivia with the most prestigious award in the world for girls: the Girl Scout Gold Award. Olivia is among 13 young women who have made a difference in each of their respective communities through sustainable, community change projects. The time and continuous effort these girls have dedicated towards their projects prove they’re true leaders, innovators, and exceptional examples for all girls to look up to.
The Gold Award is Girl Scout’s highest honor and girls are required to spend at least 80 hours investigating the problem, creating a plan, and implementing it. It is presented to Girl Scouts who address a community issue or problem they’re passionate about. Olivia chose to provide youth in her community with academic support for her project.
Olivia provided students in her community access to tutors and a library for additional academic support. She realized that although school is back open, there are many students out there who don’t have access nor the resources to obtain tutors. To help solve this problem, started a tutoring program and created a library for the youth at her church and in the surrounding community by collecting book donations from members at the church, Lakeshore Public Schools, and from her personal collection. In addition to the donations, she also recruited a group of educators at the church to become tutors in various subjects. Over the course of 24 weeks, Olivia’s program held a total of 240 tutoring sessions and it will continue to run through members of her Youth Sunday School Ministry.
